How much would you pay?

On eBay, creative entrepreneurs are offering to stand in line to buy you an iPhone on launch day. Their fee: a cool $100. That’s only one-fifth the price of the phone itself.

Others are peddling iPhone.com domain names, like iPhoneStop.com, .net, and .org, for $1,000. That’s twice the price of the iPhone’s least expensive model, but at least the domain names offer the potential to cash in on demand for iPhone accessories.

Speaking of accessories, you can find anything and everything related to the iPhone for sale on eBay. And, if you just can’t wait until the June 29 debut, you can purchase one of the much-hyped phones for as little as $1,299 — more than twice the price of the high-end model — with free overnight shipping.

High-Price Hindrances?

The eBay frenzy shows the iPhone promise in the early-adopter technophile market, but building a larger market might be difficult initially, according to a new study from Parks Associates called “The iPhone: A Consumer Perspective.” The survey found that only 3 percent of these consumers have a strong interest in purchasing the iPhone at its $500 price point and two-year contract.

“The underlying drivers for converging music, multimedia, and communications capabilities in a device such as an iPhone are certainly prevalent in today’s market,” Kurt Scherf, vice president and principal analyst with Parks Associates, said in a statement.

“However, the high price point may prevent the iPhone from achieving greater adoption over the short term,” he continued. “It may be an early-adopter product that appeals to technophiles but initially leaves other interested users on the outside looking in.”

Free For All

There are a couple of givens in the frenzied formulas that attempt to calculate Apple’s possible success with the iPhone. So far as the eBay action, that market will collapse if Apple offers an adequate supply, analysts said, but Apple has not indicated how many iPhones will ship initially.

That means eBay entrepreneurs could win big if supply fails demand. The other issue is the fact that consumers can still get a free phone — not an iPhone — for signing a two-year contract most days of the week.

But the “i factor” is the Apple brand itself, said Avi Greengart, principal analyst for mobile devices at Current Analysis. That factor is the promise of a better phone, one that has an iPod, a large display with touch capabilities, an Internet connection, and a sleek design.

“Apple is letting this product sell itself,” Greengart said. “Apple is showing you what it can do and how to use it and how radically different it is from your phone. So there’s certainly an appeal there.”

i-Delightful or i-Expensive

Greengart is one of the handful of people, without an Apple logo on his business card, who has used the iPhone. He said he tests at least 100 handsets a year. He said that some are impressive and others are exciting, but noted that none have been delightful. The iPhone, he concluded, is delightful.

“Is the iPhone worth $500 to you? If you have $500 to spend on a phone and you go into an AT&T store and test drive the iPhone, I suspect that $500 will start burning a hole in your pocket,” Greengart quipped.
